Description
As if to direct the viewer’s eye in the direction of reading left to right, deep blues, olive greens, and burnt oranges wash the left side of the canvas to fade out mid canvas. The dark shades fade to a jumble of orange and black letters. This stack of letters piles at the edge of the bleeding paint in the middle of the piece. It invokes the feeling of confusion and a wave of darkness pushes to the ultimate peak of disorientation at this wall of mixed letters. Perhaps, as the name of the piece suggests, a past of chagrin, angst, anxiety, and turmoil in learning to read comes to a head at the array of letters. If only one could read the jumble, they could get to the serene half of the canvas. This piece beautifully demonstrates the difficulty in learning and understanding language.
